I make no apologies for believing that Timothy Dalton is the closest thing we've seen to IAN FLEMING's James Bond.
James Bond is sent to investigate a KGB policy to kill all enemy spies and uncovers an arms deal that potentially has major global ramifications. Two briefly shown naked male bottoms. It's an explosive, action-packed ride from the glorious opening sequence through the ending, maintaining some level of (surprisingly effective) humor which was mostly included because the script was written, or edited, for Pierce Brosnan, who would only finally take over the role in 1995 for "Goldeneye", but largely disposing of the silliness and tackiness of the Moore era, and creating a stealthy, thrilling, effective, and ruthless Bond. mystery and thriller,
Do we really want to see Bond and Kara mired in Afghanistan in the third act, forced to buddy up with the Mujahideen rebels (who knew that in less than two decades, these folks would turn out to be so evil)? Quite simply put The Living Daylights is one of the best James Bond films they have ever made & if Wilson & co are smart they'll do more like this one.

Newcomer Timothy Dalton plays James Bond with more seriousness than preceding installments, and the result is exciting and colorful but occasionally humorless. “I’ve been such a fool,” Kara confesses at one point.

Timothy Dalton brought some younger blood to the role; he was meant to be a bit tougher but also to focus on only one Bond girl (rather than the usual two) as a concession to the AIDS era.
It just had a new coat of paint. While I eventually got used to the Pearce Brosnan as 007, Dalton was a man while the other never quite made it. His portrayal would refer back to the heroes of British war fiction: super-competent men who speak softly but carry a big stick.

All Bond movies face the challenge of maintaining a very delicate balance — get too goofy and all tension drains out of the movie, downscale things too much and you lose the je ne sais quoi that separates Bond from the competition. But Fleming was always cognizant of the absurdity at the core of his hero — the least secret agent in the world, Bond was a man in the shadows who couldn’t help standing out because of his enormous appetites. The result is a film that is not so much bad as mechanical and uptight.
The Living Daylights manages to overcome the problem of it's length (all bond movies are a little too long) and remains interesting all the way through, assisted by a plot that never requires long dull conversations like many others in the series. It's a nice new direction after getting used to the comical tone of the Roger Moore era. At the time, Daltons performance was not fully accepted by the movie going public, a far more ruthless, cold blooded interpretation of Bond, which was very different to Moores previous character.

The Living Daylights is one of those back-to-basics James Bond movies (see For Your Eyes Only) which also happens to feature a new actor in the lead role. But this film speeds by, and if it weren't for a rough middle act, this would be one of the best of the series. If James Bond was at the forefront of the Swinging Sixties, then perhaps it’s fitting that 1967’s “Casino Royale” heralds the era’s crash landing. This is a great movie and is less violent than Licence to Kill. On a side note, John Rhys Daves once again proves what a great character actor he is as General Pushkin. The Living Daylights is directed by John Glen and adapted to screenplay by Ricahrd Maibaum and Michael G. Wilson from an Ian Fleming story. Dalton shows a serious side that's been missing from the role since Sean Connery's earliest 007 days. Timothy Dalton is perhaps the most underrated actor to play James Bond, due to his rather brief stint as the character. The Living Daylights is different; even from a quarter of a century away, there's nothing to sully the romantic air.

That’s the conundrum we face with Dalton. Roger Moore bowed out of the Bond films after it was clear he was getting too old for the films from his last one "A View to a Kill". With Roger Moore stepping down from the role, the time came to recast the next James Bond and also take the franchise in a new direction.
